Moving with meaning

Our Moving With Meaning program provides downsizing support to help older Australians move from homes that have become difficult to manage into places that feel safer, easier and better suited to their needs. Our work focuses on reducing stress, improving safety and helping seniors transition with confidence and dignity.

Understanding why downsizing matters

Many older people have lived in the same home for decades, filled with memories and meaning. But as health, mobility or support needs change, a once loved home can become difficult to manage and create risks around safety, isolation, maintenance and rising costs. Many seniors also find themselves living alone in large properties that no longer suit their lifestyle.

Downsizing into a smaller, more suitable home can bring a renewed sense of comfort, independence and connection. By supporting older people to move with care and purpose, we help create living environments that are safer, easier to manage and better aligned with their needs now and into the future.

How we can help

Our Moving with Meaning program provides personalised, end-to-end downsizing support for older Australians living in homes that no longer suit their needs. We take a compassionate, outreach-based approach that prioritises safety, dignity and long-term wellbeing, guiding seniors through every stage of their move.

Our support includes:
Comprehensive needs assessment
We explore health, mobility, support needs and housing preferences to understand what will help the person live well.

Individualised relocation planning
We create a personalised plan that covers timing, accessibility needs, support services and practical considerations.

Housing navigation and placement
We work with social housing providers, retirement villages and aged care providers to secure smaller, safer homes that suit each person’s needs.

Aged care and support coordination
We help arrange aged care assessments and approvals for residential aged care or Support at Home services, advocacy, OT assessments and community supports to ensure a safe transition.

Full relocation assistance
We organise removalists, packing help, transport, utility reconnection and essential household items to make the move easier.

Residential aged care transitions
When home is no longer the safest option, we support a sensitive transition into residential aged care.

Post-move follow-up
We provide wellbeing checks, home safety reviews and support to help the person settle comfortably into their new home.

This service reduces the stress and complexity of moving, helping seniors relocate safely and independently. At the same time, it supports wider housing reform by releasing larger dwellings for families experiencing overcrowding or homelessness.

Peter’s story

A supported move helped Peter relocate into a safer, more manageable home and regain confidence.

After the passing of his wife, Peter lived alone in the four-bedroom family home they had shared for many years. For more than a decade, the house held memories — but it also became increasingly difficult to manage on his own. Maintaining the property, caring for the gardens and keeping up with daily tasks left little time or energy for the things he once enjoyed. Peter began to feel isolated and knew he was ready for a change.

Peter wanted to downsize into a home that was easier to manage, without losing his independence. He was looking for a place where he could feel secure, reduce the burden of home maintenance and enjoy social connection again. A retirement village offered the right balance — a smaller home with built-in community and the opportunity to reconnect with others.

Elder Folks supported Peter through every stage of the move. We helped him declutter and let go of large furniture he no longer needed, carefully pack and unpack his belongings, organise removalists, connect utilities and redirect his mail. We also helped Peter find a one-bedroom home within a retirement village that suited his lifestyle and budget, and arranged in-home support to assist with cleaning once he was settled.

Since moving, Peter has quickly formed new friendships, joined group activities and embraced the sense of community he had been missing. With home maintenance no longer a concern, he’s looking forward to returning to the golf course and enjoying the hobbies that bring him joy. Downsizing has allowed Peter to focus less on managing a house, and more on living well.

Frequently asked questions

These questions help explain how we support older people living in public housing in the Sydney Metropolitan area to downsize into homes that match their needs while reducing stress, risk and housing instability.

Many older people live in large homes that once suited family life but are now unsafe or difficult to manage as mobility and health changes. Downsizing helps seniors move into smaller, safer, more accessible homes so they can age well and maintain independence without the physical and financial strain of an oversized home.

We deliver a personalised, step-by-step service that includes comprehensive needs assessments, relocation planning, housing navigation, aged care advocacy, OT assessments and coordination of Home Care Packages. We also manage practical tasks like arranging removalists, reconnecting utilities and sourcing essential items to make the transition calmer, safer and more manageable.

Moving with Meaning focuses on Sydney metropolitan areas.

We coordinate a wide range of supports to enhance safety and wellbeing before and after the relocation. This may include helping them access Support at Home program, OT assessments, community services, health appointments and social supports. Our goal is to ensure seniors feel settled, confident and connected once they reach their new home.

Yes. When independent living is no longer safe, we support a respectful transition into residential aged care. This includes completing assessments, advocating for the person’s needs, navigating vacancies and coordinating services so the move is handled with care, dignity and clarity for both the individual and their support network.

We support those aged 65 and over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients aged 55 and over, following the criteria set by participating housing providers.

I went to different government agencies for help but nothing changed, I got nothing. Now i’ve got a place to live only because of Elder Folks. I am trying my best to adapt to a new environment. It was very challenging at first but it is a blessing for me to get a home because of their help and support.

Placing my father into aged care was an emotional and complex experience, especially with his physical needs and desire to stay mentally active. I had no idea where to start—but Mary made all the difference. She was kind, genuine, and incredibly supportive, helping us find the right place and guiding us through every step of the process. Even after Dad moved in, she continued to check in and offer support. While the journey wasn’t easy, Mary made it so much more manageable. I can’t recommend her highly enough.

When my parents needed to move from the family home to a suitable residential aged care accommodation we were stuck. We had no industry knowledge, no understanding of how to short list the most suitable place and we had to make a quick decision. Mary Baumann solved all that, she quickly profiled my parents needs and preferences and then made appointments to inspect the available accommodation. We were then able to quickly settle the arrangements and make the move. It was the best thing we ever did. We highly recommend the professional service offered by Mary Baumann.

Mary's enormous experience and knowledge of the aged care world is greatly appreciated by her clients. But I believe what they truly value is her compassion, dedication and empathy. Mary understands what a stressful time it is, and works hard to take away this pressure from the families she helps. I frequently hear "thank God I met Mary!"

As soon as we met Mary we felt a load taken off our shoulders. At every stage the service was both professional and respectful and we felt that Mary had our Grandmother's best interest in mind during the whole process. Our most sincere thanks for helping us, it saved us time and made the transition go quite smoothly.
