Client Background
Malcolm is a friendly 70-year-old gentleman, the kind of person who greets you with a warm smile and always has a story ready to share.
For many years, he devoted himself to caring for his unwell mother. When she passed away, Malcolm lost not only someone he loved deeply, but also the stability they had built together.
Living on a single pension, he could no longer afford their private rental in the Northern Rivers. With few options available, Malcolm was evicted. What followed was 13 months of living in his car, navigating grief, uncertainty, and isolation, all at once.
It was only after a chance connection with a local police officer that Malcolm was linked to temporary accommodation and, for the first time in a long while, began to see a way forward.
The Challenge
Finding housing in the Casino region is incredibly difficult, with a severe shortage of affordable options.
For Malcolm, this meant repeated setbacks. Property after property fell through, despite ongoing effort and hope. Each rejection was another reminder of how hard it can be to rebuild after loss.
More than just a roof over his head, Malcolm needed a place where he could feel safe, connected, and begin to put his life back together.
Our Approach
The Elderfolks Homelessness Team stood alongside Malcolm every step of the way.
We worked closely with local real estate agents, building relationships and advocating strongly on his behalf. By sharing Malcolm’s story, we helped others see beyond the application, recognising a man who had spent his life caring for others and now needed support himself.
Through persistence, patience, and genuine care, we ensured Malcolm remained seen, heard, and supported throughout the process.
The Outcome
After viewing more than 25 properties, Malcolm was finally approved for a unit in his preferred location.
Leaving his car behind and stepping into his own home marked the beginning of a new chapter. For the first time in over a year, he had a place to rest, to feel safe, and to begin healing.
With stability restored, Malcolm can now grieve, rebuild, and reconnect with his community, and with a sense of hope for the future.
Why It Matters
Malcolm’s story is a powerful reminder that homelessness can happen to anyone, often in the wake of loss and life-changing events.
It also shows what’s possible when someone has the right support behind them. By listening, advocating, and walking alongside Malcolm, Elderfolks helped turn a period of hardship into an opportunity for stability and renewal.
Today, Malcolm is not just housed, he has a place to call home, and the chance to move forward with dignity, connection, and hope.
